Event summary

The Trail Porto Moniz takes place on February 8, 2026, in the municipality of Porto Moniz, on Madeira Island. The event includes three linear trail races — Trail Ultra (43 km), Trail Long (25 km) and Trail Short (13 km). Limited to around 800 athletes, it is organised by Clube de Montanha do Funchal and is integrated into the official circuits of both the Madeira Athletics Association and the Portuguese Trail Running Association.
With steep climbs, technical terrain and dramatic scenery, it is one of Madeira’s most challenging and iconic trail events.

Distances & Difficulty

  • Trail Ultra (43 km): 3355 m of ascent, 3345 m of descent, 10-hour time limit, ATRP difficulty level 4 (Extreme).

  • Trail Long (25 km): 1795 m of ascent, 2230 m of descent, 8-hour time limit, difficulty level 4 (Extreme).

  • Trail Short (13 km): 890 m of ascent and descent, 3h15 limit, difficulty level 1 (Moderate).

Participants
The event is limited to approximately 800 runners, with distribution across the three races and 50 reserved slots per race for elite athletes and sponsors.

Mandatory Gear
All participants must carry mandatory equipment throughout the race, including backpack, thermal blanket, waterproof jacket, whistle, food reserves, mobile phone, cup, and minimum water capacity (1L for Ultra/Long; 0.5L for Short). The Ultra also requires a headlamp with spare batteries.

Checkpoints, Timing & Time Barriers
The race uses electronic chip timing. Missing a checkpoint or failing a time barrier results in disqualification. Surprise controls may occur along the course.

Registration
Registrations are open from November 23, 2025 to January 19, 2026 and must be completed via the official platform.
Fees vary for affiliated and non-affiliated athletes and must be paid upon registration.

Categories & Awards
Races award general classifications, age groups and team results. All finishers receive a medal. Prize money is awarded to the top 3 men and women in each distance.
